Osmotic backwashing of forward osmosis membranes to detach adhered bacteria and mitigate biofouling

چکیده
The efficiency of osmotic backwashing cleaning to remove bacteria from forward osmosis membranes was systematically studied for the first time under different attachment and conditions. It is hypothesized that biofouling preventable when tackling initial adhesion, i.e. during reversible stage. Cell removal membrane dependent on both adhesion conditions: tests were performed solutions concentrations salt type, as well filtration durations Ca2+ in feed solution. Following P. putida, a draw solution (DSobw) 3 M NaCl most efficient, removing 93% adhered cells after 1 min backwashing. All left dead/injured due shock. To optimise regime, maximum which efficient must be determined. This determined 30 min, became inefficient, only 78% cells. addition 5 mM caused 50% increase cell surface coverage compared without Ca2+. rendered 60%. by increasing flux, DSobw with CaCl2 used. However, this inefficient interactions between cells, even just min: 55.8 L h−1m−2 39% obtained 36 flux. Therefore, conditions are important FO membranes.

Mechanisms Involved in Osmotic Backwashing of Fouled Forward Osmosis (FO) Membranes
Organic matter leads to one of the biggest problems in membranes: fouling. Developing efficient cleaning processes is therefore crucial. This study systematically examines how alginic acid fouling formed under different physical and chemical conditions affect osmotic backwashing cleaning efficiency in forward osmosis (FO). The fouling layer thickness before and after osmotic backwashing was mea...
متن کاملAquaporin, forward osmosis and biomimetic membranes.
Aquaporin attracted attention not only of physiologists and biophysicists, but also of chemical engineers. Here we critically analyze a paper describing aquaporin-based artificial membranes, suggested for forward osmosis-based water purification (Wang et al. 2012, Small 8, pp. 1185-1190). Related papers published later by the same group are also discussed. We indicate recently developed general...

Nowadays, forward osmosis (FO) with many advantages in water treatment, are so attractive for researchers and investigators that the studies are going to optimize and increase its efficiency. However one of the most controversial operating malfunctions of FO process is fouling that limits the FO global application. In the following research, vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) on alumina...
متن کاملSeparation of Peptides with Forward Osmosis Biomimetic Membranes
Forward osmosis (FO) membranes have gained interest in several disciplines for the rejection and concentration of various molecules. One application area for FO membranes that is becoming increasingly popular is the use of the membranes to concentrate or dilute high value compound solutions such as pharmaceuticals. It is crucial in such settings to control the transport over the membrane to avo...
متن کاملForward Osmosis as a Pre-treatment to Reverse Osmosis
This paper presents some aspects of forward osmosis coupled with reverse osmosis using a recirculating draw solution, to produce desalinated water or for dewatering/concentrating a feed stream, with some data provided from a number of operational sites. Many of these aspects are applicable to other osmotic processes and provide an insight into where they may be appropriately considered. A compa...
